The New Moon in Cancer on July 14, 2026
The New Moon in Cancer on July 14, 2026 at 21 Cancer begins a new lunar cycle. Every New Moon represents a fresh start, but Cancer reminds us that not every new beginning starts with taking action. Sometimes it starts by paying attention to what's going on inside of us first. This New Moon brings our focus to our emotional well-being, our home, our family, our memories, and the things that help us feel safe and secure. It asks us to slow down long enough to ask ourselves some important questions.
How am I really doing?
What have I been feeling lately?
What needs my attention?
I think those questions are just as important as setting intentions.
Every New Moon also marks the beginning of what I call the Lunar Gestation Phase. Just like planting a seed in a garden, what begins now takes time to grow. You don't plant a seed today and expect to see flowers tomorrow. The same is true with the intentions you set under a New Moon. They develop gradually over the weeks and months ahead.
This is one of the reasons I encourage journaling every New Moon. Write down what you're feeling, what you're learning, what you're hoping to create, and even the questions you don't have answers to yet. Then come back and read those journal entries over the coming months. You'll often discover that your life has been changing in ways you didn't fully recognize while you were living through it.
Preparing for the New Moon: The Balsamic Lunar Phase
Before we ever reach the New Moon, we first move through the Balsamic Lunar Phase, which takes place the two and half days before every New Moon. This month, that's approximately July 11, 12, and 13. I think this is one of the most important parts of the lunar cycle, yet it's often overlooked. Most people get excited about the New Moon because they want to set intentions and start something new. That's wonderful, but before we plant new seeds, it's helpful to clear away some of the old ones that never had a chance to grow.
The balsamic phase gives us that opportunity. Rather than asking yourself, "What do I want next?" ask yourself, "What am I ready to let go of?" Cancer is a deeply emotional sign. It rules our family, our home, our memories, our past, and the emotional foundation we've built our lives upon. During these few days before the New Moon, don't be surprised if old memories surface or if you find yourself thinking about family, your childhood, or situations that still carry an emotional charge.
That doesn't mean you're moving backward. Sometimes those memories return because there's another layer of understanding waiting for you. Sometimes you've grown enough that you're finally able to look at something differently than you could before. Give yourself permission to sit with your feelings instead of immediately trying to fix them.
If you've been feeling emotionally overwhelmed lately, your nervous system may simply be asking for a break. We live in a world where we're constantly doing, planning, solving problems, and taking care of everyone else. Eventually our mind and body ask us to slow down. Honor that.
The few days before a New Moon is a wonderful time to journal, meditate, spend time near the water, go for a walk, pray, or simply sit quietly without feeling like you have to accomplish something. There may also be conversations that naturally come up during these few days. Some conversations bring healing. Others bring understanding. Some help us finally say something we've been carrying around for a long time. You don't have to force those conversations, but if they happen, try to approach them with kindness, honesty, and an open heart.
As you're preparing for this New Moon, begin your journal. Write about what you're releasing, what you've learned over the past month/s, and what you'd like to carry forward into this next lunar cycle. Think of it as preparing the soil before planting new seeds. You're also preparing for the beginning of the Lunar Gestation Phase. These journal entries become a valuable record that you can return to over the coming months. Looking back often helps you see just how much has changed, even when the growth wasn't obvious at the time.
The New Moon in Cancer
When the New Moon arrives on July 14, the energy begins to shift. Now we're ready to plant those seeds.
Cancer teaches us that emotional health is the foundation for everything else in our lives. If we don't feel emotionally supported, it's much harder to make good decisions, build healthy relationships, or move forward with confidence. So I want you to ask yourself something. What makes you feel safe? Really think about that because the answer is different for everyone.
For some people it's spending more time with family. For others it's creating healthier boundaries. Maybe it's making your home feel more peaceful. Maybe it's finally giving yourself permission to rest. Maybe it's asking for help instead of trying to do everything yourself. Or maybe it's simply learning to trust your own feelings instead of pushing them aside.
Cancer reminds us that nurturing isn't only something we give to other people. It's something we need to give ourselves, too. Many of us have become very good at taking care of everyone around us while quietly putting ourselves at the bottom of the list. This New Moon asks us to notice whether we've been doing that.
Your feelings matter. Your emotional well-being matters. And if you've been carrying around emotions that you've never fully processed, this New Moon offers an opportunity to begin. Notice I said begin. You don't have to figure everything out overnight. Sometimes the most important step is simply becoming aware of what you're feeling.
If your emotions have been close to the surface lately, don't judge yourself for that. Cancer is a water sign, and water needs to move. Feelings need to move too. They aren't meant to stay bottled up forever. That's another reason I recommend journaling. Writing slows our thoughts down and helps us organize what we're feeling. Sometimes we don't even realize what's going on internally until we see the words on the page.
As you write, don't just record your intentions. Record your feelings. Write about what's happening in your life. Write about what you're noticing. Since this New Moon begins the Lunar Gestation Phase, these journal entries become a valuable reference point over the coming months. I can't tell you how many times I've looked back at an old journal and realized something that seemed small at the time eventually became a major turning point. That's one of the gifts of working consciously with the lunar cycle.
Mercury Retrograde Helps Us Reflect
Another reason I like this New Moon is because Mercury is retrograde in Cancer. I know Mercury retrograde gets blamed for just about everything. Yes, there can be delays and misunderstandings, but Mercury retrograde also gives us something incredibly valuable. It gives us time to reflect.
With Mercury retrograde in Cancer, we're reflecting on our feelings, our family history, our memories, our emotional responses, and sometimes even commitments we've made that no longer feel right. You may find yourself revisiting an old conversation. Someone from your past may reach out. Or maybe you'll simply recognize an emotional pattern you've been repeating for years. That's valuable information.
Mercury retrograde isn't trying to keep you stuck in the past. It's helping you understand yourself better so you don't continue repeating the same patterns moving forward. Combined with this Cancer New Moon, this is beautiful energy for self-reflection, journaling, counseling, meaningful conversations, and emotional healing.
Looking Back Before Moving Forward
There's one more piece I'd like you to think about. Jupiter recently left Cancer and entered Leo, but it spent the past year traveling through Cancer. Whenever Jupiter moves through a sign, it expands our opportunities for growth in that area of life.
Think back over the past year. How have your feelings changed? How have your family relationships changed? Have you learned healthier boundaries? Do you understand yourself better than you did a year ago? Have you become more aware of what you need emotionally?
Growth doesn't always happen all at once. Sometimes we only recognize it when we stop long enough to look back. Now that Jupiter has entered Leo, we're beginning a new chapter that's encouraging us to express ourselves with greater confidence and creativity. But before we fully move into that next chapter, I think this Cancer New Moon gives us a chance to appreciate just how much emotional growth has already taken place.
Final Thoughts
As you move through this New Moon, don't feel like you have to have everything figured out. You don't. Instead, give yourself permission to slow down. Pay attention to your feelings. Take care of your nervous system. Have the conversations that need to happen. Journal honestly, even if what you write doesn't seem important at the time.
Remember, this New Moon begins the Lunar Gestation Phase. The seeds you're planting now need time to develop. That's why I encourage you to keep coming back to your journal over the months ahead. You'll begin to see how your intentions, your experiences, and the astrology all start weaving together.
Sometimes the biggest changes in our lives don't happen all at once. They happen one small step, one realization, and one New Moon at a time.
