New Moon in Libra Looking at Our Relationships

The October 10 New Moon in Libra is an opportunity to look at our relationships more honestly. Libra brings our attention to cooperation, balance, fairness, and the way we relate to other people. Our choices don't happen in isolation. Other people are part of the equation, and sometimes what we want has to be considered alongside what someone else wants or needs.

There is something especially important to consider with this relationship oriented New Moon in Libra, though. Venus, the planet that rules Libra, is retrograde. When the ruler of a New Moon is retrograde, I pay attention to what that planet is asking us to reconsider. In this case, Venus is already taking us back into questions about relationships, values, money, and what we are willing to give and receive. So this Libra New Moon isn't just about starting fresh. It is also about looking again at something we may already be in the middle of.

That can make this a useful time to look honestly at the relationships in your life. Where is there a sense of balance, and where isn't there? And by balance, I don't mean that everything has to be equal all the time. Healthy relationships aren't always 50/50. There are times when one person needs more, and there are times when the other person needs more. Life doesn't work according to a spreadsheet.

The bigger question is whether both people matter.

Maybe you have been doing most of the work in a relationship. Maybe you are always the one making the plans, reaching out, compromising, or keeping the peace. Or perhaps you have been expecting another person to understand what you need without actually saying it. Sometimes we don't recognize these patterns until something brings our attention to them.

This is one reason Venus retrograde is important to this New Moon. Venus retrograde can bring us back to something we thought we had already figured out. A relationship may need another look. A conversation may need to happen again. Something we once accepted may no longer feel acceptable. Or we may realize that what we thought we wanted isn't actually what we want anymore.

That doesn't mean every relationship needs to end or that every problem needs to be solved right now. I don't see a Venus retrograde as a mandate to make dramatic decisions. Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is become more honest with ourselves before we decide what to do.

What do I actually want from this relationship?

That is a simple question, but it isn't always an easy one to answer.

We can get very good at adapting to other people. We learn what keeps someone happy, what avoids an argument, what makes things easier, and what we can tolerate. Over time, though, we can lose track of where our own needs fit into all of that.

Libra brings the other person into the picture, but that doesn't mean the other person gets to have everything their way. It also doesn't mean we get everything our way. Libra is about learning how to live with the reality that two people can want different things and still have a relationship.

Sometimes that requires compromise. Sometimes it requires a boundary. Sometimes it requires a conversation that you've been avoiding because you already know it may be uncomfortable.

And sometimes you discover that the imbalance isn't coming from the other person at all. Maybe someone has been giving more than you realized. Maybe you've been asking for something without recognizing what the other person needs from you in return. Looking at a relationship honestly means being willing to see our own part in the pattern, too.

This can apply to romantic relationships, but it certainly isn't limited to them. Think about friendships, family relationships, work relationships, business partnerships, or any situation where you regularly interact with another person. Libra is concerned with the space between people. How do we meet? How do we listen? How do we negotiate? How do we make decisions when we don't agree?

Those are very practical Libra questions.

The New Moon is also a time when we naturally think about beginning again. But with Venus retrograde, I would add another question to that process: What have I learned from what has already happened?

Maybe the last few weeks have shown you something about a relationship that you couldn't see before. Maybe you've become aware of a pattern that has been going on for years. Maybe you're realizing that you've been saying yes when you really mean no. Or maybe you are recognizing that a relationship has changed and the way you relate to each other needs to change with it.

Not every relationship problem needs to be fixed. Some things need to be accepted. Some need to be renegotiated. Some need a clearer boundary. And some may eventually need to be left behind. But we don't have to decide all of that simply because there is a New Moon.

For now, it may be enough to notice.

Where is there balance in your life, and where are you doing more than your share? Where are you expecting more than someone can reasonably give? Where have you stopped saying what you really mean?

These questions aren't about finding fault. They are about awareness.

That is what makes this New Moon in Libra particularly useful. We aren't being asked to create perfect relationships. We are being given an opportunity to become more conscious of how we participate in them.

And because Venus, the ruler of this New Moon, is retrograde, we may need to look backward before we can move forward. Something from the past may have something to teach us about what we value now. A familiar relationship may look different when we are finally honest about what we need. A choice we made before may need to be reconsidered with the understanding we have now.

A new beginning doesn't always mean something new comes into our lives. Sometimes the new beginning comes from doing something differently within a situation we already know.

That may be the real opportunity of this Libra New Moon.

Not perfection. Not making everything equal. Not keeping everyone happy.

Just becoming more honest about what is working, what isn't, and what you are willing to do differently.

And if you like working with the New Moon by writing intentions, this is a good time to do that. You might write down what you want to create or change in your relationships, how you want to communicate, or what kind of balance you want to bring into your life.

If writing intentions isn't really your thing, I would still encourage you to do some journaling around this New Moon. You don't have to make it complicated. Write down what you are noticing, what you are questioning, what feels out of balance, or even something you aren't quite sure what to do with yet.

There is a reason I suggest keeping those notes.

A New Moon is the beginning of a lunar cycle, and the things we put our attention on at a New Moon can continue to unfold as we move through the related lunar phases. I use what is called the lunar gestation cycle, which gives us another way to look back at a New Moon and see what developed from the seed we planted at the beginning.

You may not remember what was on your mind several months from now. Having it written down gives you something to return to when another lunar event connects back to this New Moon. Sometimes what seemed like a small thought or question on the day of the New Moon turns out to have been the beginning of something much more significant.

So whether you write a formal intention, make a few notes, or simply spend some quiet time thinking about what this New Moon is showing you, give yourself something to look back on.

You don't have to know exactly where this is going. Just pay attention to where you are now.
